A Clear Advantage
LDT Import-Export Enters Licensed Marketplace with Crystal Wear

Getting into the licensed sports business is sometimes a muddled decision. Other times, it’s crystal clear. That’s an appropriate way to describe LDT Import-Export’s entry into the marketplace. A provider of beautiful glass crystal wear, LDT is a relative newcomer to the licensed industry. According to Rick Esposito, the company is glad it made the leap.

“Initially, we pursued licensing as more of an add-on,” he says. “We wanted sustainability. We’ve found that there are no borders to fan loyalty. New markets continue to open for us.”

Currently, LDT works with the NBA. Under its Imagix brand, the company offers 3-dimensional Crystal Collectible Image Blocks. LDT features three or four players for each NBA team, plus a logo model. Image Blocks are marketed as paperweights, but their popularity extends far beyond office decorations.

“The line has done very well,” says Esposito. “They are selling in stadiums in Canada and the U.S. The team sports retail market is also a good one. Many consumers see our NBA Image Blocks as collectibles.”

Along those lines, LDT is exploring new ways to package the product. For example, the company may introduce NBA Image Blocks in a commemorative series.

Speaking of expansion, LDT is looking at increasing its reach in sports licensing. “We’re in talks to close with Major League Baseball and the NHL,” says Esposito. “The NFL is a possibility, and the college scene is very attractive to us. We could anything from school logos to well-known campus icons.”

LDT hopes to learn more about the business when it makes its debut at the Sports Licensing & Tailgate Show in January. Esposito is excited for the opportunity. LDT will have a full display at its exhibit, including items such as clocks and wine bottle stoppers.

“We think it will be a great venue for us,” he says. “LDT is able to work within the licensed industry in a variety of ways, including customized products. We’re eager to network with distributors and dealers alike.”
